Helping or Hurting

January 26th, 2018

There are so many times when we are in a relationship with someone and we’re doing everything we can to help them up, but what is really going on is they are pulling us down. This is the painful dynamic that occurs when we’re dealing with a person who is incurably selfish and self-centered. When we give to people such as this, it is like feeding our love and effort into a funnel rather than a waterproof bucket. We give of ourselves and they immediately and always need more and more, consistently telling us that we’re not doing enough. Incurably selfish people will drain us completely dry of having any left over energy to expend in our own lives towards ourselves. We have to diligently and mindfully not drown ourselves in their lives thereby losing our own. If we’re consistently exhausted by a relationship we are in, then we’re in the wrong one. If we live in fear, confusion and frustration, we are in the wrong relationship. If we are helping someone who refuses to be helped, we are not helping them, we are hurting ourselves while growing them into an even bigger monster.
